Thought it was time to reintroduce the Match Report to try and capture some of the flavour and moments of the matches.
The last time we met this team was very eventful. 6-0 up at half time, an impromptu parent vs. boys half time kick-about (Leigh taking a tumble into the mud!), then a second half of driving rain and wind and a relief when the final whistle went as Cuckfield had brought the score back to 6-4!
Today was a different story. Cuckfield started defending very well and made it hard for our boys to break through. It wasn’t long though before Oscar and Cam both had great shots, one going wide and one saved. But after a sustained period of attack, great passing and moving, Oscar scored off a rebound from a good save 1-0. We were away! A lovely long ball over the top from Oscar found Billy with a great finish and 2-0. Cam then missed by inches, just over the bar. An amusing moment in our half had Conall, Jack, Sam and a Cuckfield player in a scrum on the floor in a muddy patch. The ball mysteriously, trickled out and luckily being cleared. A great shot from Oscar made it 3-0, then a super piece of control from Cam made it 4. An inch perfect cross from Liam found Oscar just before half time and it was 5-0.
No parents match today at half time and luckily no change in the weather either!
I think it was fair to say we dominated even more in the second half and controlled the game from the whistle. Cuckfield, for their part, kept battling hard until the end. Goals came from a Cam header (6-0), a cheeky Cam back heel (7-0), a lovely cross from Conall which Liam took well (8-0), a great left foot from Rob (9-0), a turn and shoot from Oscar (10-0), a great strike from Liam on the right (11-0) and a final flourish from Oscar with a blast from the edge of the penalty area (12-0).
All the squad played great football today – passing, awareness, communicating. Really well done to all of you. Tom celebrated his birthday in style with a well deserved man of the match.
We had Cuckfield substitutes watching from the top of the climbing frame, Steve trying to give Andrea coaching tips and a do-it-yourself crèche for our youngest supporter! The Coach’s cry of the week was “play the easy ball”.
A commanding performance and enjoyable football.
Thanks go to Jon for running the line.
