Saint Hill Blues 2 Forest Row 4

A tall order for 10 players up against league leaders

So to our much awaited rearranged game against Forest Row, the team that beat us 6-2 earlier in the season. Unfortunately the weather had not been good and the pitch was very heavy, it was touch'n'go if the match would go ahead, but the ref gave the ok and the match was on. We were down to 10 players due to holidays and sickness.

The game kicked off and we started spritely taking the game to Forest Row and had  good early chances to take the lead, I thought we really played well in those early stages and played down the wings where we are at our best, also best for the conditions too.
The centre of the pitch was cutting up pretty badly and very soggy and often the ball was holding up with anything played through the middle, Forest Row came into the game more as the half progressed, but our defence played well and stayed very tight, Jack had a calm head playing at right back and often stopped the opposition in their tracks and got us moving forward. Unfortunately for us we conceded the fist goal midway through the half when a long ball was thumped forward and were caught out when one of their players ran through to score, 1-0 to Forest Row.
From the kick-off we still tried to play our game and did create a good chance to score but only this time to be stopped by a good save from their keeper.
Forest Row went on to score a second before halftime and we went in 2-0 down.

The second half started pretty much the same way as the first did with us having most of the early stages of play, we tried really hard to overcome the deficit but were again caught on the break with another long ball over the top and went 3-0 down, we really didn't deserve this score line. But it was great to see the lads reaction to this, their heads stayed up and they still believed, the defence was holding up well, Jon making some crunching tackles, Ben De Turris too was stopping so much, Toby in goal made some quality saves and in midifeld Alex was working his socks off to overcome their extra man, we were now playing our best football of the game and pressing hard, their keeper pulled off some quality saves, one in particular I remember was a fingertip save to his left, but unfortunately on this occasion the save wasn't spotted by the ref and so no corner, and it was another disappointing decision the led to their 4th goal, when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box, the execution of the kick was really good and Toby didn't stand a chance as the ball sailed over his head at pace into the top corner of the net.

The injustice of that free kick really seemed to fire up the guys and again Forest Row were really under pressure, we finally got rewarded for all our hard work when Adam scored a really well worked goal. The boys really had the bit between their teeth now and from the kick-off were back on top and back in the opponents box, then we had a great passage of play when Jon won the ball with his head and played the ball upfield, he continued to run upfield himself and was able to complete the play when the ball came back out to him and then to fired home our second, this was a really pleasing moment as Jon was the only outfield player not to have scored for us this season.

Again from the kick-off we pressed again and Forest Row were really on the back foot, we had a chance for the third but it wasn't to be and the game finished with us loosing 4-2.

I was really impressed with the guys again today, they gave their all and feel for the second time this season against Forest Row that situations conspired against us, and we never had the chance to have a good contest with them. But as I explained to the team afterwards this result does not make much difference to the league table, as it is in our hand to finish second in the League and fully believe we will do so.

Today we had a lot of good battling performances on the pitch but my man of the match goes to Jon who was very strong at the back and scored a quality goal.
