Saint Hill Blues 3 Storrington Vipers 0

This time it counts!

Today we welcomed our opponents Storrington Vipers Uniter U12, who we meet in our first league game of the season, that day we put in an impressive performance with only 10 men and won 9-1, unfortunately due to league rules we were denied the points and were in turn awarded to Storrington.

Since our last meeting Storrington had improved greatly and at the start of the day sat 2nd in the league table, 4 points in front of us but have played 3 games more.

Today were without Benjie and keeper Toby, Luckily for us we were able to draft in Marcus from the Saint Hill Blues U13’s.
Ben De Turris took the gloves for the day and moved Will into left back from his midfield position, the match kicked-off at a very windy Fonthill and it was apparent early on that we were going to have to work hard for these points, Storrington went on an early attack and hit the post and soon after another of their attacks was stopped by good defending from Jon.

After the initial few minutes we settled down and the possession evened out, we started to created openings, Freddie going close on a couple of occasions, we were also being strong in defence with the whole of the backline making good challenges and on the occasions it did breakthrough Ben was then to clean up.

About midway through the half we got out break playing some nice football, Marcus in the centre on midfield had good vision to see Josh on the wing and passed the ball out to him, Josh ran the ball down the wing and slipped the ball through to Freddie who in turn took his chance well and slotted home, a good goal.

After that goal we continued to dominate, Jack was linking up well with Josh and we kept plugging away looking for the second goal, the pressure rewarded us with a throw in level with our opponents box, Josh took the throw which Adam received in the box and slotted home, Halftime 2-0.

We kicked off the second half, as in the first half both teams were finding it difficult to play possession football, the unpredictable flight of the ball as the wind buffeted did mean that possession was often conceded.

Storrington Kept fighting, looking for a goal, but we defended really well, Will was having an exceptional game at left back, time after time going in for a challenge and coming out with the ball, more play in the second half was going down our left wing and about 10 minutes into the half Adam got his second when he got his head on the end of a cross, heading down into the ground which bounced over their keepers head.

At 3-0 up I gave Will a well-earned rest from his defensive duties and he and Adam switched positions.
For the remainder of the game we held out really well, we defended stoutly and Storrington went away empty handed, and we won 3-0.

For the second week running we kept a clean sheet and this was really pleasing today as this was quite a competitive game.

Normally at this point I would talk about individual performances but today I feel the whole team dug in well and got us a good result collectively, but I will give my man of the match to Will, whose performance today was solid, so many good tackles and passes (it must be those magic pink boots).

So to next week, we have our much awaited League cup quarter final at home to Lingfield U12, this will be another good test for us and am really looking forward to see if we can take the journey one step further.
