Saint Hill Blues 6 Ockley Acorns 1
At home at last, and another victory1
Our Opponents today were Ockley Acorns, a team that sat in second position in the table having played 7 and won 7.
The match kicked off, we immediately took control of the early possession creating some good changes in front of goal. After about 5 minutes the pressure paid dividends when Freddie was taken out in the penalty area just as he was going to strike, the penalty was awarded, Adam stepped up and fired the shot which the keeper saved, but luckily for us the referee had spotted that the keeper had moved off his line and ordered a re-take, this time Adam got the goal.
As the half went on we continued to have the upper hand in possession and chances but this was a tough game, Ockley had some good periods of possession but just couldn’t break down our defence and on the occasions when the ball did come through Toby was there to save. Ockley too had a strong defence and an excellent keeper, we had some excellent chances which were either stopped with a good challenge or superb
saves by their keeper, then as the break was looming we had Adam running down the left wing with the ball passing to Freddie who then passed back to Adam to fire home the second, taking us into half-time 2-0 up.
During the break we had the benefit of having Coach Keith on hand to assist with the half-time team talk, and with the onset of the second half he had them well fired up and ready to go.
The second half started and Ockley seemed determined to pile the pressure on, but to our credit we dealt with it really well and continued to apply pressure of our own, and it was that pressure that led to our third goal when a Josh corner found a group of players in the box which Alex Bingham reacted to first and scored.
Not long after that goal we succumbed to the opponents pressure and conceded a goal,
but at 3-1 up we looked good, playing the better football and were having the majority of possession, and it was some lovely passing that led to the next goal, the midfield exchanging passing well finding Adam who then found Freddie to slot one pass the keeper into the far corner.
At 4-1 we continued to press hard, and was great to see Alex score from just outside the box, knocking the ball over the keeper into the net, we finished off the game with another of those typical Freddie goals where he was through with only the keeper to beat, he calmly slotted the pass him and we finished as 6-1 winners.
Today we worked hard for this impressive victory, and I cannot praise our defence enough for their efforts. For big parts of our season so far the defence and keeper have had little to do. These last 2 games were always going to be a big test for them and they have passed with flying colours.
The centre midfield trios involvoing Will, Alex B, Jack and Benjie are week on week becoming so comfortable with their games and their visions to pick out the wingers, which is great to watch.
To pick individuals out today was again very hard because of the quality of the whole team but I would like to thank:
Jon and Max in the centre of defence, Max who reads the game so well and talks to those around him and Jon who I have made a special mention of the last 3 weeks, his performances are great to watch, using his strength and height to help keep our defence solid.
Alex H. Another of those weeks where he does so much of the simple stuff so well, his speed allows him to set himself up for great timed tackles and today he was rewarded with a well taken goal.
Toby, another fine performance, pulling off some great saves, and today was releasing the ball to the wings much quicker.
Ben De Turris, my man of the match today, his efforts in the first half were excellent, tackle after tackle, running with the ball and making great passes to put us on the attack, this was a superb performance Ben, well done.
So thanks to you all today for this great performance and see you all on Thursday
