You know it must be the football season when you are standing in the blustery wind at Whiteman’s Green! Although to be fair the sun was trying to shine and it wasn’t as cold as it could be, has been or will be.
The first half was fairly evenly contested with Cuckfield looking determined and strong, and stretching us in all areas. Our goal came from some lovely creative play down the right flank and found Lee, well positioned in the centre, to slot the ball away and give us the lead.
The second half started in much the same vein but we seemed to be able to control play a little more, push a bit harder and keep up the pace. Cuckfield started to tire as the half progressed and we dominated more. Oscar’s first goal was a wonderful strike from the left side which seemed to swerve in the air, chip the keeper and into the right hand top corner. His second was deftly slotted past the keeper, following Conall’s finely delivered corner. Other chances were denied us by the Cuckfield Keeper making some good saves, and some finishes we just could not find.
A good positive start to the season today, but lots of areas to work on, I am sure. Steve and Gary will no doubt be filling the boys in on this at training.
So sorry we had injuries and sickness keeping the squad small today – we wish every one a speedy recovery.
For future reference coffee, including cappuccinos, and bacon sandwiches, area available from the Rugby Club!
Neil was our man with the flag today, thanks.
