Uckfield United 4 Saint Hill Blues 2

Gone with the wind!

An extremely frustrating day and very disappointing result! For three quarters of this match the Blues played better football and with a two goal advantage as we moved into the last 20 minutes a first league win promised, but a goal direct from a corner, blown in by the wind, gave Uckfield the encouragement to press and we could not hold out

The first half started evenly but we gradually took control of the game, the ball being moved forward from back to front with confidence. Ashley forced the mistake and then scored our first showing strength and determination and just before the break his pace took him free of the home defence again to double our lead. The advantage had been supported by a strong performance across the back line, man of the match performance edged by Patrick although Chris and George pressed him hard.

At the start of the second half the Blues demonstrated that they had listened to the message for more of the same and on another day Ashley might have secured a second consecutive hattrick. The last 20 minutes were agonising as the home team forced the game by playing a succession of long, high balls forward. An individual, well taken goal levelled the scores, although possession was given up too easily to allow the forward run and when another goal direct from a corner gave Uckfiled the lead the game was virtually up!

Many thanks to Oliver P who donned the keeper's jersey again and in the first half made two important saves to give us the chance to take a lead, he could not be faulted for the wind assisted efforts scored later! Some of the referee's decisions were also frustrating, but we must not dwell on these issues, it will not change the decision and may prove to be a distraction to our own performance.
