LINDFIELD

Lindfield 2nd April 2006
Score : Saint Hill Blues 2 Lindfield 1
QUOTE - 'If I was playing I would be shooting, given any opportunity' - Matt Dunn - Coach
For the first time in the Saints history they completed a double against their opposition. With only 11 players available the Saints managed to play some good football that eventually created a well deserved victory. With a defence that had never played together and a game where the players knew they had to stay the distance, a victory was a welcomed outcome. This wasn't to say that Lindfield gifted the game, far from it. They had their chances but Sam in goal had other thoughts and made 2 outstanding saves during the game to tilt it in favour of the Saints. Alex Smith latched onto a fine through ball from Phil MvManus and opened the scoring after 25 mins. Lindfield fought hard and with the wind behind them lobbed the ball into the heart of the Saints back line and eventually notched a fine goal. Saints could have had 3 by half time, Eliot Law, playing at right back went on an uncharacteristic run past 3 Lindfield defenders to fire a fierce shot into the side netting. Alex Smith could have made it 2 but for a good save from the Lindfield keeper. Half Time 1-1.
With no subs as an option some good coaching from Matt Dunn found the Saints well on top in the second half even though they were playing up the slight hill. Mind you, the wind picked up and some of the Lindfield clearences barely got out of the box. The pressure had to bring a result and following a series of corners Phil McManus crossed a ball for David Smith to 'thigh' into the goal to make it 2-1 to the Saints. The Saints could have had more but for some good defending. Good games from Phil McManus, Alex Smith and Sam Blake were tipped by a gritty performance from Will Bishop to claim MOM. Result 2-1 to the Saints.
