COMMENT: 'We needed to bounce back following the thrashing we were given at Worthing. On a very hard pitch we worked hard and deserved our victory' - Keith Law
This was never going to be an easy game but it was the Saints themselves which made it hard. After just 2 minutes Steve Morley found himselve in the Oak box and worked a header to Ross Martin who's angled shoot found the net a great goal . . . however the linesmans flag was up and the goal was disallowed. The Saints continued to pressure the Oak goal and as the goalmouth scambles continued the Saints were growing impatient and one could almost sence that the Oak's would steal the lead which they did when a well delivered shot found the Oaks forward breaking into space to take a good goal and the lead 1-0 in the 22nd minute.
Half time 0-1
It must be said that both keepers were playing well and Mile Oak held onto their lead and were catching the Saints as they pushed forward for the equaliser. Mile Oak were unlucky not to go 2-0 up when a goalbound effort was excellently cleared off the line by Charlie Richards.
In the 65th min. Eliot Law was replaced by Tom Bracey and Ross Martin by Adam O'Callaghan. This seemd to disturb the Oak defence and with Morley making five in the middle the Saints push for the goal and it was Steve Morley who took the ball and ran at the defence and as the advancing defender came out edged it to Alex Smith who netted from close range for the equaliser on the 80th min. The Saints were now going for it. The Oak keeper made more great saves but five minutes later in another goalmouth scramble a Saints player was fouled and a penalty awarded. Steve Morley was the player fouled and he took the penalty and gave the keeper little chance with an excellent penalty. 2-1. With just 5 minutes left the Saints went back to 4 at the back and Dan Burgess made two great advancing saves with his feet to kept the Saints lead. Then with injury time being played Tom Bracey made a great interception to also preserve the 2-1 lead and win the game.
The game had been hard fought on a hard demanding surface and both teams should be given credit for such an entertaining hard game.
Saints MOM was Dan Burgess for saving two certain goals. Well done Dan.
